Shafin Raza, who aspires to be a doctor and a member of parliament, was surprised to be inducted as the headboy of Sangam (SKM) College during the investiture in Labasa last week.

The 18-year-old of Delailabasa in Labasa was grateful to his father Khalid Hassan, former Northern Divisional Police Prosecutor for bringing out the leadership qualities in him.

“I have a dream to do something good so that people remember me even after my death,” Shafin said.

“That’s why I want to become a doctor so that I can help people. My inspiration comes from my eldest and only sister who is currently pursuing MBBS.

“I also want to become a member of parliament so that I reach out to a greater number of people with assistance,” Shafin said.

“Being the headboy of this school provides a platform for me to develop my leadership qualities and serve teachers and students.

“My aim is to instil peace and improve interaction between teachers and students.”

Now operating his own business from home his father, Mr Hassan is proud of his son.

“I have been encouraging him to achieve greater heights because in life you should not be content where you are at the moment,” Mr Hassan said.

“You need to push every limit and boundary to bring the potential in you for the benefit of your family, communities and nation.”

The newly inducted headgirl Shanaya Prasad, who also aspires to be a doctor was surprised to be inducted as the headgirl. She thanked the students for voting for her.

“Students in the school are given the privilege to vote whom they want as headboy or headgirl,” the 18-year-old of Labasa said.

“I would like to thank my parents who are both school teachers and the principal of this school for their love and support.

“I believe that an individual can do anything if you have hope, determination and courage.”

The chief guest, Master of the High Court Labasa Siainiu F’aalogo Bull reminded the 95 prefects from Year Nine to 13 that the oath they took was before God and men.

“Remember when fear, insecurity, injustice and unfairness threaten to cloud your judgment of what you know deep down, to be wrong choose to do the right thing,” Ms Bull said.

“Treat everyone right.”
