For the first time there will be a cruise vessel in Labasa before the end of this year to boost tourism, economic activity and create employment.

Charan Jeath Singh Group of Companies owner Charan Jeath Singh who is New Zealand has confirmed that he is searching for a cruise vessel.

“We are talking to a company in Dubai but if we can find anything in Australia or New Zealand then we may opt for that,” Mr Singh said yesterday.

“It  all depends on the price of the vessel as it must be within our budget,” he said.

“The tourist vessel is a closed cabin and open deck type having a capacity to carry upto 50 passengers and crew at any one time.”

Mr Singh said: “There is no such cruise or service in the North for either locals or tourists to see the outer islands of Vanua Levu hence, I thought of providing that service and give our visitors from abroad the opportunity to explore the outer islands in the Northern Division.

“It will definitely generate employment to those who will man the vessel, indirect employment to the villagers of the three islands that we intend to convert this service to,” he said. The three islands are Vorovoro, Mali and Kia.

The villagers will be given contracts to prepare meals for the guests and also perform cultural items for which they will be paid.

The vessel will be berthed at the Grand Eastern Hotel jetty in Labasa.

“The plan is to visit three islands on a day’s tour.

Mr Singh hopes to purchase a $250,000 vessel with another $100,000 to set it up.
