For three years,  Abdhul Aiyaz Khan of Wailoaloa in Nadi tirelessly built two half cabin boats, Jet Fisher  and  Baadshah  in his backyard.

The father of six a fisherman by trade is no longer keen on continuing to rely on fishing as his main source of income.

“I have six children, two in secondary and the rest in primary – I can no longer take the risk going out to sea to fish,” Mr Khan said.

“There has been continual change in the weather pattern, I’d rather concentrate on boat building now,” he said.

“The same hands I use to fish are the same hands I am now making boats.

“I come from a line of fishermen, I dropped out of school to help my father fish as it was our source of income – I want my children to have a brighter future.

“My wife is sickly; education is the best way for my children to graduate from this cycle.”

Baadshah is a 31 foot half cabin boat with 60 horse power Yamaha engine while Jet Fisher is a 28 foot half cabin boat with 40 horse power Yamaha outboard engine.

“I started with nothing; these completed boats were made from parts of some boats left behind by previous owners.

“I brought them in, took everything out and started assembling parts together to make two boats from the little knowledge I had gained while working for a boat building company a few years ago.

“I even applied for a loan to help me buy few materials for the boats.”

The half cabin boats are made of wood and aluminum each equipped with boat engines, Global Positioning System (GPS), fish finder, cooking items, emergency flares, life jackets, fire extinguisher and first aid kit.

The boats have the capacity to accommodate four people for a fishing trip.

Mr Khan is selling Jet Fisher so buyers are welcome to drop in at his Wailoaloa home to inspect the vessel.

“With my fishing background I have inherited love for the ocean and have always dreamt of building my own boat,” he said.

“Now that I have built these two seaworthy vessels this is the start of my small business now.”
