As Tropical Cyclone Gita continues to track westward in Fiji waters, the Ministry of Agriculture stands ready to assist farmers in the affected areas. The Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, David Kolitagane said the ministry’s focus was on agricultural areas affected by Tropical Cyclone Gita.

This includes anticipated affected maritime islands of Matuku, Totoya, Moala, Kadavu and smaller islands of Southern Lau.

“It is prudent that farmers pay close attention to all weather forecasts, warning and advisories issued and it is best to follow precautionary measures,” Mr Kolitagane said.

“Our officers are on emergency standby and all efforts will be coordinated accordingly.”

In addition, the permanent secretary said the support from the Ministry of Agriculture as part of its response plans to the agriculture sector had strategised priorities which would be coordinated through the National Disaster Management Office.

“Included in the response plan is the distribution of planting materials such as cassava and kumala cutting to affected farmers from the Extension Division with the assistance of the Research Division.” Farmers and members of the public are further advised to monitor the weather and heed advisories.
