Ketan Kirit Lal has become the first Fijian to take up the role of Pacific representative to the Commonwealth Students Association.

The 23-year-old Fiji National University student was part of the 20th Commonwealth Education Ministers Meeting in the Sheraton Fiji Resort on Denarau Island in Nadi yesterday.

The fourth year Bachelor of Civil Engineering student is originally from Savusavu in Vanua Levu.

He is also the president of the Fiji National University Student Association which is the national body for all the campus associations within the university.

“I was recently appointed so I am getting to that point where the other regional representatives are at,” Ketan said.

He got advice from various youth networks around the country to assist him steer his role as Pacific representative to the Commonwealth Students Association.

One of his goals, Ketan said was to form a Pacific Youth Network where all regional student associations would gather to discuss issues they faced. The Commonwealth Students Association, he said was basically to provide capacity building for national students organisations at every level in the Pacific region and unify students under Commonwealth nations.

“Being a Pacific representative I will basically look at the common issues affecting our youths. We have issues concerning students, but we need to look at the bigger picture,” Ketan said.

“My role is to take issues affecting our youths in the region to the Commonwealth Students’ Association.”
