The Nadi Town Council (NTC) is in the final phase of installing parking meters along the streets of the town.

This follows the upgrade of the footpath by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) as part of the future City status of the township.

NTC special administrator Robin Ali said there is a total of 226 parking meters in Nadi town with 116 alone found on the main street.

“This is part and parcel of the upgrade as Nadi is aiming for city status,” he said.

“FRA has completed the footpath maintenance and the parking meter automatically comes into installation.

Some streets to follow with the second phase include Hospital Road, Ashram Road, Sangam Road and Market Road.

“Our technicians are working on it. About 20 are left to be completed and by this week it will be completed. There are some parts that need attention.

“These are the same machines which have been used since its introduction in the town in 1987.

“Some changes to this set up are that we don’t bury the meters but we are welding it to the top pavements,” Mr Ali added.

These manual parking meters have braved three major floods since the main one in 1999 where these meters were underwater for a week.

The council is urging the public to refrain from slotting foreign currency, washers, ice-block sticks, recharge cards and sim cards.

“These machines have a lot of minute gears installed in it and since it was installed in 1987 we have found people slotting unwanted things apart from coins. We ask them to stop since it cost the council a lot when it gets damaged,” he said.
