Despite awareness campaigns on proper rubbish disposal, people continue to dump their rubbish anywhere they want.

Sadhna Lata, of Koroi Place Samabula, said people have been dumping rubbish near her home.

The area comes under the Suva City Council (SCC).

“I raised this issue with the Suva City Council and nothing has been done.”

Ms Lata said SCC collects rubbish on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

“The town council came once to warn the people living around the area not to throw the rubbish near my home but nothing has changed,” she said.

Ms Lata said: “The dump creates bad odour and breeds mosquitoes which is unhygienic for peoples living there.”

She said they cannot sit on the veranda because of flies and mosquitoes coming from that polluted area.

“People tried to burn the rubbish last year; unfortunately, the Fiji Electricity Authority power line caught fire.

“As a responsible citizen of Fiji I went to complain twice but nothing has been done apart from warning people,” she said.

Questions sent to the Suva City Town Council went unanswered.
