Fiji has come a long way in being transformed as  a society that believes in the empowerment of women and recognising their contribution to the development of our nation.

This was highlighted by the Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Veena Bhatnagar during the opening of Central Craft Show at Sukuna Park in Suva yesterday.

This two-day craft show is the fifth in the series of craft shows to be held in the 2017-2018 fiscal year.

It was an exhibition of craft by women from the Serua, Namosi, Tailevu, Naitasiri and Rewa provinces as well as from the island of Beqa.

Participating in this two-day Craft Show in the Central Division were 560 women.

Of all exhibitors, 80 will be selected to participate at the National Women’s Expo in Suva in June, based on their ability to meet market demands, and of course the quality of their products.

Ms Bhatnagar said women, especially rural women, having toiled under stereotypes for centuries owed it to themselves to embrace how they could be effective actors of development within their homes and the society.

“Families need to support the girls within their homes foremost in making strong minded, progressive and passionate women who can influence greater positive changes or themselves and those around them.

“Today, in contrast to past centuries, we find women literate, educated, and liberated to lead.

“We find their surge forward not only in the political front, but also in social life where they act as agents of change contributing to economic development as well.”

“Women’s roles have expanded from being home makers to being the force behind the evolution of our societies,” Ms Bhatnagar said.
