Centenarian Catholic nun, Sister Angela Cavey, was laid to rest at the Old Suva Cemetery yesterday.

The sister of Saint Joseph de Cluny, Order of Fiji, died on March 1 at the St Joseph Cluny House at Toganivalu St in Suva.

Fondly known as Sister Angela, she had quietly celebrated her 101st birthday on January 25.

Hundreds turned up to celebrate the life of Sister Angela at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva yesterday before she was laid to rest.

Sister Angela was born on January 25, 1917 in Dublin, Ireland.

At her 100th birthday last year, President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote and the First Lady, Sarote Konrote, had joined in the occasion.

She served in Fiji for 42 years as a secondary school teacher at St Joseph’s Secondary School, as a teaching helper at St Anne’s School in Mathematics and Literature, and was a school secretary assistant at St Joseph’s Secondary School and a community worker.

Sister Angela was instrumental in overseeing the construction of St Joseph’s Secondary School’s multipurpose hall.

She was also a popular face at Nausori selling clothes on Saturdays to raise funds for the building of the multipurpose hall.

Sister Angela also served as a primary and secondary school teacher, school secretary and community worker in West Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the Cook Islands.

She had entered the St Joseph of Cluny Novitiate in Ferbane, Ireland, in 1936 at age 19 and after six-months of postulancy she was received as a novice on March 11, 1937.
