Tourists, Joana and Steve Whitaker have always made it their purpose that they donate items to a school at every port they visit.

The two were passengers onboard cruise ship Explorer of the Sea that berthed at the Lautoka wharf last Wednesday.

When Sun Shipping met the couple, they were looking for the nearest school to donate school stationeries.

The nearest school was the Lautoka Central Primary School.

Mrs Whitaker, 45, works in a retail business while her husband Steve, 60, works in a mining company in Perth, Australia.

Mrs Whitaker said this was their first visit to Fiji and the 11th country they have travelled too.

She added although they might not have much they still made the effort to give what they can.

“We have travelled to so many countries around the world from Vietnam, Bali, Singapore and many more, but not a country as this – like Fiji,” Mrs Whitaker said.

“So whatever city or country that we travel to we do whatever we can, though we might not have much. We know the littlest things we donate can make a difference,” she said.

“I am very passionate about this and I love doing what I do because there are people in the world that need our help.

“We make it our goal that in every country we would at least give food, school stationeries to those that need them.”

Ms Whitaker added they have future plans to revisit Fiji to help other schools.

Lautoka Central Primary School Head Teacher Dalip Kumar Ram said they were pleased to see that people were taking the initiative to help the school.

“This came as a surprise to us seeing the couple come this morning (last Wednesday),” Mr Ram said.

“But it is good to see that there are people out there who are always willing to help from the goodness of their hearts. We will always cherish what they have done for the school,” he said.
