A total of 729 athletes are participating in the two day Lautoka Secondary School athletics zone which started at Churchill park in Lautoka yesterday.

This is the highest number recorded in the Lautoka zone compared to the previous year’s according to Lautoka Secondary Schools Athletics Association president Jupendra Narayan.

“The event proper will start tomorrow (today) and this year 12 schools participating in the Lautoka Schools Zone Athletic and 729 athletes,” Narayan said.

“So I believe that should make the biggest and largest ever for the Lautoka Secondary School Zones athletics.

“Yasawa North High School withdrew in the last hour for their own commitments.”

Narayan said schools have been preparing well even though the weather was not in their favor.

“Though the weather was not that good, the Lautoka Town Council has helped us by providing the arena free of charge for the students to train in,” he said.

“This is the second time that it is being held in Churchill Park, and with the right facilities we will be able to produce better results.

“Before the tracks were introduce in Suva only, but with the right conditions the athletes will be able to lift their performance to another level.”

Narayan added they will be including a photo finishing system this year.

The two days meet will culminate today.
