On Behalf of the Fijian Government, the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation invites all Fijians to join women all over the world in celebrating International Women’s Day.

Celebrated annually on 8th March, International Women’s Day is an event that considers and recognises the contribution of women towards nation building.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives” with the Campaign Theme of #PressforProgress.

It is a day of reflection of all that has been achieved in the march towards gender parity; a day to remember and acknowledge the work of activists who have taken great strides in making the contribution of women more visible; a day to pay tribute to the millions of women around the world who contribute so much to the development of their communities and their nations without the usual accolades and recognition.

When we bring this home to Fiji, today is a day when we as a nation can celebrate the achievements of our Fijian women in whatever sphere of life they may be active in.

Rural women, urban women, women in paid employment and those in the unpaid care economy – all women contribute in one way or another to nation building.

Gender equality and the empowerment of women is a priority for Government.

This goal is fortified by our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals with the rallying call that no one is left behind.

A concerted effort across all sectors of our economy is necessary if we are to truly progress in our quest for gender equality.

Today is also a day for stakeholders to do what we can, as an institution, as an association, as a private entity or as an individual, towards the attainment of true gender equality.

Women play an important role in the development and progress of our respective communities and the nation as a whole; however their contribution is often not fully recognised due to the unequal gendered power structures that permeate through the fabric of our society often discriminating against women.

Let’s celebrate this day by giving recognition to the role of women in society, and highlighting opportunities for the often untapped potential of women to the socio-economic agenda and their competence as leaders.

The empowerment of our Fijian women is vital to the development of our nation.

Today we acknowledge the tremendous contribution of all our stakeholders, donors, UN agencies, foreign missions, non-government organisations, civil society and male champions for your commitment towards the realisation of gender equality and the empowerment of our Fijian women.

Let’s renew our pledge to work in collaboration and #PressforProgress towards gender equality.
