Pacific Flying School (PFS), the late student pilot Merelesita Lutu will be laid to rest at the Lovonilase Cemetery in Suva after a solemn farewell service at the Centenary Church at 9:30am today.

The late Ms Lutu’s and the late Iliesa Tawalo’s bodies departed from Waiqele Airport in Labasa at 7:30am yesterday bound for the Nausori International Airport.

Upon arrival at the Nausori private airport lounge, officials of the flying school handed the late Ms Lutu’s casket to her family.

While receiving the casket, a spokesperson for the family said they did not expect to be performing the traditional iTaukei protocols at the airport.

“Sega ni namaki me mai vakayacori tiko e dua na i valavala da mai kilai tani kina na i taukei,” he said.

“Ki na vuvale sa mai dabe ena mataka nikua. Sa Dina sara ni goneyalewa dau veikauwaitaki, goneyalewa dau loloma, goneyalewa e guiguilecavi dredre ena vuvale qo.”

(We did not expect that we would be performing this traditional iTaukei protocol today to the family that is here today for the young woman who was always caring, loving, and a young woman who will not be easily forgotten in the family.)

The family of late Ms Lutu expressed their sincere appreciation to the flying school community for bringing her home to them.

They also relayed their good wishes to her teachers and fellow PFS colleagues in their future endeavours.

After the completion of the traditional handover at the Nausori airport, PFS Owner Tim Joyce and his manager left Nausori airport to accompany the late Mr Tawalo’s body on the flight to the Nadi International Airport.

The late Ms Lutu’s funeral cortege led by a Fiji Police Force escort and Life Flight (Fiji) proceeded to the Lutu residence in Tamavua via Princess Road.

The cortege had a brief stopover at the residence where extended family members bid farewell to the late 20-year-old before she was taken to the MIOT Pacific Hospital where her body lay, waiting until today.

The whole of Fiji shares in the sorrow of the two families and mourns the tragic loss of the late Ms Lutu and the late Mr Tawalo.
