The accident wreckage of the Cessna aircraft that crashed last week has been recovered from the crash site and secured.

Independent Investigator Andrew McGregor said the recovery exercise was completed in difficult conditions, with rugged mountainous terrain and bad weather delaying progress.

“It was made possible due to the professionalism, skill, co-ordination and great teamwork between the Police, army, fire service and Doguru villagers,” said McGregor.

“I would also like to mention the helicopter pilot, Nick Ragg of Pacific Island Air who demonstrated exceptional skill in airlifting the wreckage from the difficult crash site to the assembly station at Doguru village.”

McGregor added the investigation, which will be undertaken in accordance with international air accident investigation procedures, can now begin.

“Its purpose is not to blame anyone but try and find out all the factors that contributed to the accident so it can be prevented from happening again.”

“We are interested in the possible contribution of bad weather to the accident, along with other factors that might be revealed as part of the investigation.”

“It is not possible to comment further on possible causes until the accident investigation has concluded and the final report has been submitted to the Fijian government.”
