Lavena Primary School in Taveuni received a grant of $173,908 from the Embassy of Japan to build classrooms and teachers’ quarters.

The grant signing was done at the embassy last Thursday.

The grant was given for the construction of two classrooms fully equipped with school furniture and one teacher’s quarters.

The Charge d’Affaires ad interim for Japan Embassy, Tsuguyoshii Hada, said the school had played a crucial role for the surrounding communities, but it did not have a separate classroom for Year 6 and Year 8 students.

“At present, classrooms are shared with Year 5 and Year 7 students,” Mr Hada said.

“This has led to students studying in an overcrowded environment, which is not conducive to the delivery of quality education.

“Through the formalisation of the project today (Thursday), the school will benefit from construction of two classrooms equipped with furniture and a teacher’s quarter.”

In receiving the grant on behalf of the Lavena Primary School headteacher, Ilaisa Deke, said since the school was established in 2010, the roll in the school had been rising.

“The grant given to us will ease the congestion that we are facing in our school right now,” Mr Deke said.

“I sincerely thank the Embassy of Japan on behalf of the students, community and the teachers for its assistance.”
