2200 Complaints on Employment Standard Recorded by Ministry

Employment Ministry received 2200 complaints on employment and employment standards in 2017.

Employment and Industrial Relations Minister Jone Usamate confirmed that the ministry had investigated and settled 634 complaints.

“A total of 1566 complaints remain to be dealt with and are in the final investigation stages,” Mr Usamate said while tabling his response to a question from SODELPA backbencher Ro Kiniviliame Kiliraki, in Parliament.

“Employers and workers will have to provide further details on wages and time records and contracts before the complaints are fully disposed and dues are paid to the workers.”

The ministry has recovered $93,859.43 as payment for dues owed to workers in 2017.

In 2017, the ministry received the highest number of complaints from the Wholesale and Retail Trade recording 493 complaints, followed by the Security Industry which is mainly companies running private security firms.

There were 303 complaints recorded against security companies.

Against the hotel and catering industry there were 266 complaints recorded

“The highest number of complaints for these three industries was mainly arrears of wages, overtime and meal allowance entitlement,” Mr Usamate said.

“The proactive workplace awareness will continue this year, targeting all employers and workers in these sectors.”
