Today I am getting my wages since this is a volunteer programme.

Mohammed Shanil, 35, believes that he was getting paid after his five years of hard work.

This was after he received the Youth of the Year male award during the Youth Awards Night held at Labasa Special School on Friday night.

Mr Shanil, who is originally from Siberia, is also the chairperson for Labasa District Youth Council which is the parent body of 25 youth clubs within Labasa, Seaqaqa and Nadogo.

“Today I am getting my wages since this is a volunteer programme and I have been part of this for the past five years,” Mr Shanil said.

“I feel proud because I was not expecting to be awarded. This is my first award and I am happy to be here receiving my award.”

He said youths were the future of the nation.

“We need to prove ourselves worth whereever we are. I motivate other youths to join hands and make a brighter future for ourselves and the next generation,” Mr Shanil said.

“I dedicate my award to the youth administrator for Macuata Mr Shalendra Bishwa.

“He has been supportive and encouraging throughout the five years. Whenever I needed help he is there.”
