The Disability Bill does not take away but adds to the society, says Fiji Disabled People’s Federation president Joshco Wakaniyasi.

Mr Wakaniyasi, 45, who has been in a wheelchair for the past 11 years, has commended the Government for recognising the needs of persons with disability and respecting the consultations.

The Fiji Disabled People’s Federation has four affiliated organisations with 16 branches with a population of over 30,000.

Mr Wakaniyasi said the bill was long overdue.

“We are thankful to the Government for recognising the importance of the bill,’ he said.

“Persons with disability will get to realise there are now legislations for them. The bill will provide pathways like access to transportation like buses and vessels and airports.

“We also have a disability allowance for persons with disabilities. The budget for the disability sector was increased as well by the Government and we are very thankful for that.”

He said the bill complimented and provided pathways in achieving legislations that were already out there for them.

“Government has ensured and given the recognition to the disability service providers to acknowledge and respect the work that we do and how we can improve on it,” he said.

“Government has always been saying that their processes, their procedures and policies is about ensuring that everyone is treated fairly.

“They have always kept their word when they said to ‘leave no one behind’.

“The bill does not mean that the Government is solely responsible for everything. We have to work with the Government and assist them in achieving their plans and goals.”
