Journalists are the champions for raising community awareness on health issues, changing social norms, inciting emotions and getting people engaged to change their health behaviours.

This was highlighted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) representative in the South Pacific and Pacific Technical Support director Dr Corrine Capuano during the Health Reporting for Improved Health Outcomes workshop at Novotel Suva Lami Bay yesterday.

Fifteen participants from media organisations in Fiji and 12 senior managers from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services were at a one-day workshop in collaboration with WHO and the Health Ministry.

Journalists from media organisations shared their experiences in reporting on health issues. And what are some of the challenges they face while reporting critical and sensitive health stories.

The workshop also taught on the new trend of communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases and emergencies or outbreaks.

Dr Capuano said the workshop was important for everyone to work together and learn from each other’s experiences in working with communities to improve health outcomes.

Assistant Minister for Health Alex O’Connor said the workshop was to recognise how the media could better communicate issues that the communities and Fijian families were able to get the information they needed in a timely and transparent manner.

He said the media played a crucial role as key champions for change in health behaviours and as the early warning system for health emergencies.

“During an emergency or outbreak, we rely so heavily on the media partners to provide critical health information to affected communities,” Mr O’Connor said.

“We have appealed for factual reporting by the media.”
