Fiji has lost one of her favourite sporting sons in double international Pita Dau who died in Lautoka on Thursday night.

Dau captained the Fijian football team that beat Australia 1-0 in 1988. He later was selected into the national rugby team under coach Samisoni Viriviri (Snr) and made his Test debut against Tonga in 1991.

Families and friends took to social media expressing their shock at his sudden passing.

Former national rep Ronald Chaudhary posted on his social media account stating, “Former double international Pita Dau’s passing has brought the soccer and rugby loving nation to a shock.

“Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the family especially in this difficult time, May our good Lord give strength and comfort. RIP “Brother Mann will be missed dearly.”

His wife Mere Tulo was still in shock yesterday.

“He called me earlier on Thursday night saying that he was on his way home,”she said.

“Later I received another call telling me to go to the Lautoka hospital straight away.

“I could not believe when I was informed the bad news by the doctor.”

Police confirmed Dau was rushed to the Lautoka Hospital by a group of friends on Thursday night.

They are awaiting post mortem results to ascertain the cause of death.
