Team Fiji women’s rugby sevens captain, Ana Roqica is wary of their pool opponent Wales.

The Fijians are in Pool B alongside hosts Australia, England and Wales while Pool A has New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Kenya.

“We expect it to be tough,” she said before their departure yesterday.

“We don’t know how the Wales girls play since they normally play fifteens.

“We will take one game at a time. This is our first time in the Commonwealth Games and our aim is to win a medal.

“We have faith in the girls and watched them during training. I know we can win a medal. We have a lot of families there and they know that we are coming so there is a lot of support and it will motivate us.”

The Iliesa Tanivula coached- side boasts of six Olympians. They are Roqica, Rusila Nagasau, Litia Naiqato, Timaima Ravisa, Viniana Raiwai and Lavenia Tinai.

The others players in the team are Ana Naimasi, Miriama Naiobasali, Pricilla Siata, Mereula Torooti, Lavena Cavuru and Vasiti Solikoviti.

“It was tough for us in the last three weeks. We had our fitness test so that our coach could choose the 13 players last Monday,” she added.

Baby of the team, Elenoa Naimata is the 13th member. The Ra native plays prop.

“For me it’s a privilege and being the youngest of the team at the age of 18. I’m learning and I’m hopeful that one day I will be like them too and try to do better.

“Watching big teams like Australia play will help me understand what’s required to be at the international stage.”

She was part of the women’s sevens team at last year’s Commonwealth Youth Games.
