A chief of a district in Naitasiri Province has voiced his strong opposition to a call for Fiji to consider same-sex marriages.

Waima district chief Ratu Timoci Rokobukete said he was shocked to read in the Fiji Sun the view of provisional National Federation Party candidate Savneel Sangeet about the subject.

Ratu Timoci said Fiji accepted Christianity and same-sex marriage was unChristian.

He said according to the Bible marriage was an intimate and complementing union between a man and a woman in which the two become one physically.

For the iTaukei community, he said, it was against their culture to contemplate or support same-sex marriage.

“The people of Waima are totally against same-sex marriage,” he said.

Ratu Timoci said some countries had passed laws on same-sex marriage and he has appealed to all the political parties in country to stay away from the issue during their campaign.

Meanwhile, in earlier interviews, religious groups in Fiji voiced their opposition to same-sex marriage.
