Five letter writers last week received rewards for their contributions to the Fiji Sun Letters to the Editor section for the months of January and February 2018.

Fergus Garrett, Rishaal Kumar, Stephen Chandra, Dharmendra Kumar and Tomasi Boginiso were the five winners.

They wrote on different topics of their choices relating to pressing issues.

 Fergus Garret articulated reasons for the falling standard of English and how it can be remedied.

 Rishaal Kumar was excited when he received his award. He said it was the first time he had written a letter and was thankful to be recognised.

Mr Kumar wrote about the potholes which cause traffic jams along the Suva-Nakasi stretch of the Kings Road. He stays in Davuilevu.

 Stephen Chandra said he wrote letters to express his thoughts especially when he feels things are getting too much for him. He wrote on job descriptions.

“I write when I feel that things don’t make sense to me,” he said.

“Because when I talk to people, no one can do anything, so I thought it is best to write and use the media platform as a form of awareness as well.”

 Dharmendra Kumar wrote about unifying impact the game of rugby 7s has on the people of Fiji, here and abroad. “Rather than keeping quiet, I prefer writing to express my feelings and my view. I love writing,” he said

 Tomasi Boginiso wrote about yaqona sessions. “I write because I want to make an impact. But I make it a point to not write about politics and instead focus on issues affecting ordinary people.”

The winning letters were judged by a team of senior sub-editors at this newspaper. The selection team is always looking out for new writers who can add to the national debate on pressing issues through their letters each month. Edited by George Kulamaiwasa
