A number of passengers who were on board MV Spirit of Altruism on Monday have acknowledged the swift action of the Patterson Shipping Services when the vessel struck the Cakaudavui Reef.

Rajneel Prakash said as much as he understood the frustration of many parents and elderly people, they were glad to have reached Natovi Jetty safely on Monday night.

Mr Prakash said they were given snacks while waiting and were advised to put on life jackets and not to panic. “We understood the delay to get us to safety, it was a bit late but the sense of relief we all felt when we got on land was different,” he said.

“We thank those men who came in the fibreglass boats to get us on board.”

He said there were around six cars and four buses still on the vessel.

Meanwhile, a father who was waiting for his family at Natovi Jetty since midday, said he was pleased to be reunited with his family.
