Keep your school and surrounding clean, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama told teachers and students of Navesau Adventist High School during his visit to the school yesterday.

“Your school surroundings … our hall, even at home, it needs to be kept clean,” he said on a stopover at the high school in Wainibuka, Tailevu, on his way to visit flood stricken areas in the West.

“I know we have 296 boarders so the boarding facilities and accommodation needs to be kept clean.”

Speaking to the principal Sanaila Sumo, Mr Bainimarama said the school needs constant scrubbing.

“Cleanliness is very important,” he said.

He also said that the school officials should be very careful with the numbers of students they enrolled.

In terms of hygiene, Minister for Health Rosy Akbar said because there was no monitoring and control of the numbers, the students were suffering.

Mr Bainimarama assured the school that it would be provided with new beds, proper cooking utensils, gas stoves and some desks.

The school’s water supply systems would also be looked at.

The unsafe water system was believed to be the cause of Meningococcal disease in the school.

Navesau Adventist High School has a total of 390 students.
