Slow start for the Fijian swimmers in day one of the competition at the Optus Aquatic Centre at Surfers Bay yesterday.

Paul Elaisa first swam in the men’s heat two 50m butterfly and clocked a seasonal best of 26.94sec. Epeli Rabua sets a personal best of 26.33 in heat two.

Matelita Buadromo set her new personal best in the women’s 100m butterfly heat three with a time of 1min.04.03sec..

Taichi Vakasama set a season best in the men’s 200m breaststroke with a time of 2min.21.07sec.

The four swimmers failed to reach the semifinals.

Head coach Sharon Smith said they were satisfied with the results even though it was not what they expected.

“First day is always difficult, there was a lot of nerves but good seasonal and personal best results,” Smith said.

Meanwhile, Vakasama and Herbert Rabua will compete in the 100m breaststroke and Cheyenne Rova and Buadromo will compete in the women’s 50m butterfly heats today

Stephen Pillay lost 3-0 to Ian Rukunya on Uganda; Sailesh Pala went down 3-0 to Joel Mankin of Wales and Romit Parshottam lost to Ravindu Laksiri of Sri Lanka on similar margin. In the women’s Alison Mua lost 3-0 to Sarah Parry of England.


Fiji’s Jone Davule lost to his Mauritius opponent Louis Richarno in the men’s 64kg on a split point’s decision


Seruwaia Malani finished 9th in the women’s 48 kg competition.
