A 51-year-old law student of the University of Fiji was produced in the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday charged with witchcraft.

The accused, Mohammed Sharif, appeared before Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne and was represented by defence lawyer Unaisi Baleilevuka.

On the first count of witchcraft and sorcery, the court heard that between March 12 and March 15, 2018 the accused allegedly practiced witchcraft on a lady, pretending to cure her and obtained cash amounting to $740.

On the second count of indecent assault, the accused allegedly assaulted the same lady by fondling and squeezing her breast.

The alleged incident happened on March 18, 2018.

The accused’s plea was deferred.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Arvind Kumar strongly objected to bail on the ground that the charges against him were serious and that the protection of the community was paramount.

Ms Baleilevuka informed the court that the accused was a professional diploma in legal practice (PDLP) student and would soon be admitted to the bar to be a lawyer.

She added that he was also a Nadi businessman.

After considering submissions from both counsels, Magistrate Gunaratne granted Sharif’s bail for a sum of $1000 bond with two sureties.

A stop departure order was also issued against the accused and he was ordered not to reoffend or interfere with prosecution witnesses.

The case was adjourned to June 5, 2018 for mention.
