The Minister for Waterways Mahendra Reddy has established a team to reach out to people in Labasa who need assistance such as  clearing waterways or debris.

This was confirmed by Mr Reddy yesterday.

“Straight after the flash flood a team carrying chainsaws, ropes and other equipment was deployed to Labasa to clear debris and drains,” Mr Reddy said.

“If anyone has debris stuck in the area they can contact our office and the team will immediately reach out with assistance.

“As we will continue to experience bad weather I would like to request people to keep nearby drains clean and don’t throw rubbish or any material that will disrupt the water flow into them.”

Mr Reddy said his teams had over the past two months opened up drains, desilted drains and made new drains to ensure flood water flows out in case of heavy rain. “We have successfully done that in a number of areas, for example at Siberia and Vunicuicui in Labasa,” he said.

“When there used to be a little bit of rain the entire roads and drains used to be under water but now that has changed.

“We have done dredging work early this year which has minimised the impact of flood in the Labasa Central Business District area.”

A lot of work has been done and the result is seen now in the minimisation of the effect of floods,

“There are other areas we need to seek engineering advice on for example for the Soasoa flat in Labasa,” Mr Reddy said.

“We have done four kilometres of drainage work in this flat but despite that the sheer volume of water and the low lying plane of Soasoa have contributed towards flooding there

“It is something that is beyond our control in the short term. But, in the longer term we might have to look at some other types of drainage systems.”
