Tevita Koyamainalele did not have to look far for the inspiration to join the Fijian Navy.

The Navy Commander Captain Humphrey Tawake and he come from the same island of Vanuabalavu, in Lau.

Mr Koyamainalele, 21, is the second youngest of four siblings He wanted to join navy after observing how his idol, Captain Tawake, rose to become where he is today.

A graduate in information technology from the University of the South Pacific, Mr Komainalele was overseas for a year before he applied and was recruited for naval training.

“While growing up, I watched how he (Captain Tawake) worked. He was very happy with his career in the navy,” Mr Koyamainalele said.

“Initially, I did not plan to join the defence forces but the commander’s example motivated me.

“Because of his achievements, I know that I am changing and I have become a better person.

“One of the things I have learned in the last seven weeks was self-discipline.

“I learned through self-discipline that I can change my life to be a better person and be an inspiration for others as well.”

He said he was happy to see that the Fijian Navy was recruiting women to join the force.

“I have always seen the navy as a male-dominated force and seeing women being recruited is one of the great achievements for the Fiji navy,” Mr Koyamainalele said.

“It is challenging for the women to join the Fijian Navy. I know that they are capable of facing all sorts of challenges ahead of them as I have witnessed some great young women throughout the last seven weeks of training.

“The only thing I can do is support them to keep facing those challenges, overcome it (the difficulties) and motivate them to be an inspiration for more women to join the navy.’’
