Mereoni Tatagi was in tears when her daughter Apolonia Vaivai won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia yesterday.

Speaking to SUNsports, Tatagi said her thoughts went back to the struggles they went through during the early days of her daughter’s sporting career.

And she thought of the advice she always gives to her, which contributed to her success.

Tatagi who singlehandedly raised her daughter said, since Apolonia was growing up she never thought that she would take up weightlifting.

“Apolonia did not like sports when she was young,” she said.

“Apolonia never played any sports and for her to come out and started doing weightlifting, I never thought that she will reach this far.

“Now she’s travelling the world, representing our country and I’m proud of my daughter. I always advised her to put God first in everything she does, pray and have faith in the Lord.”

Tatagi said Vaivai always listened to her despite whatever pressures she is facing.

“She never talks back and always listen to my advice and has been blessed with all her sporting achievements.

“She spent most of the time away from home because of training and preparing for her competitions and the whole family is proud of her.”

It was the first time for Tatagi to see her daughter compete internationally.

“When she competes I’m always scared of the weights she lifts.”

Vaivai acknowledged her mother’s endless support.

“I want to thank my mother for coming to watch me, her presence meant a lot to me. I want to thank FASANOC and the Government for their support.”
