Police officers are keeping an eye out for criminal elements while conducting rescue operations in the Western Division as the weather is forecast to take a turn for the worse.

Chief Operations Officer, acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Meretino Qiolevu said they factored this into their operations and adopted the necessary strategies to keep criminal elements at bay.

On Saturday night, two men were in custody at Lautoka Police Station for allegedly robbing a 23-year-old taxi driver at Tavakubu Cemetery Road in Lautoka.

A/ACP Qiolevu said the two, aged 32 and 25, hired the taxi and upon reaching Tavakubu, allegedly robbed the driver before driving away in the taxi.

He said a report was received, officers were notified and a team on patrol spotted the stolen vehicle at Korovuto, Nadi.

The officers were able to pursue the car and apprehended the two suspects.

Investigations are continuing.

Meanwhile, A/ACP Qiolevu said, officers were also keeping an eye out for possible cases of looting and theft.

He added that officers would make decisions on the ground when to restrict movement.

He said if flood waters entered a town then entry into that town would be strictly monitored and controlled.

“This is for the safety of the public as well as ensuring that criminal elements will not take advantage of the situation and commit crime,” A/ACP Qiolevu said.
