Residents along Wainibuku Road, Nasinu, was not happy with the drainage problem along the Wainibuku Road yesterday.

While many declined to be named, one resident Sofaia Gafi said this was the first time that flooding was “so bad”.

“I have been living here for more than 10 years, the only problem here is the culvert. It is really narrow,” she said.

“People have been throwing rubbish in the drains, which clog the culvert and block the waterways.

“This causes problems for us who live around here,” she said.

When the Fiji Sun team arrived at her home yesterday, Mrs Gafi was cleaning her garage. It was all muddy after the water receded.

At the height of the flooding, the house was surrounded by water.

Meanwhile, at Farm Road, Sasawira settlement, less than a kilometer from Wainibukuresidents were stranded because of excessive flooding.

When the Fiji Sun team arrived at the scene, one resident Miliakere Radinimali, was waiting for floodwaters to recede so she could cross to the other side of the road to her home.

She was returning from Nausori.

“People have been crossing, but I just don’t want to take the risk, I will wait.”
