A family of four are looking on the bright side, despite the past few weeks of flood and recent cyclone, saying the power outages and water supply disruptions brought them together.

“I know a lot of damage has been done and some have lost their lives but for us, it brought us together in terms of having more family time,” 35-year-old mother Mere Lico said.

She said they had been living without water since the long Easter weekend as there has been no water in the Naikabula area since then.

The family had to travel seven kilometres by car from their Naikabula residence to the Paipai River at least after every two days in order to do their laundry.

“At least it gives us an opportunity to bond where our children can go for a swim, while my husband Etuate Nagata and I do the washing.”

“It is sort of a family picnic, where we get to come as a family and spend time together.”

She said having disruptions in electricity had also brought about that same effect.

“Now instead of my children being glued to the television, we actually have a chance to sit around the candle light and tell stories, which was something really good because it helps our family life.”

She said in the midst of all the suffering, chaos and loss of possessions, people must always remain positive with what was happening around them.
