Farmer Unaia Balekenasiga says he has lost $15,000 worth of crops in the flood brought about by Tropical Cyclone Keni.

The 54-year-old of Natuwaika, Naitasiri, was shocked and in grief as he watched his root crops and vegetables ruined by floods in Waidra, Baulevu, Kasavu.

He said there were more than 4000 plants of dalo and cassava with watermelon and other vegetables that were to be harvested in the next couple of weeks.

He said the crops and vegetables were the only sources of income for the family of seven.

“Our income comes from crops and vegetables we use to supply daily to the market; now we have nothing left for ourselves,” Mr Balekenasiga said.

“My children were very sad when they saw the hard work of the family ruined.

“Farming is difficult. It takes a lot of hard work and patience and we had hoped that the money we would get by selling these crops, we would be able to renovate our house.

“All our plans are now washed away.

“I told my children I will manage something for the house and also for the food but I know they are heartbroken as they were the ones who had helped me in the farm every afternoon,” Mr Balekenasiga said.
