Evacuation centres in the North are closed and all schools will be operational today.

Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea has confirmed that all evacuation centres in the North are closed and schools will open today.

During a press conference at Macuata House in Labasa yesterday, Mr Vocea thanked the National Fire Authority and Labasa Corrections Service officers for helping in cleaning the schools flooded in Labasa.

“About seven schools were used as evacuation centres and affected by the recent flash flood,” Mr Vocea said.

“There are still some places without water like Vaturekuka and Vatunibale.

“Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has informed us that it will take another two days to complete fixing the main pipe at Nasealevu as the authority is waiting for water in the river to recede.

“We will scale down our emergency operation to a skeleton team to monitor the weather situation and for our staff to write reports and send it to NDMO.”

He also confirmed that some crossings are still closed to traffic because they were flooded and some damaged.
