Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has announced the final special cane payment of $4 million to assist sugarcane farmers as part of the TC Winston Relief Payment as allocated in the 2017-2018 National Budget.

A Ministry of Information statement said yesterday nearly 10,000 sugarcane farmers would benefit from this special cane payment.

After careful reassessment of the payout, the formula determined that roughly 15 per cent of growers had benefited from the full maximum payment.

Thousands more growers will be receiving either full or partial payments to finalise Government’s payout process, the ministry said.

As a result of this special payment, all sugarcane farmers in Fiji will have received equitable and direct financial assistance to go towards the repayment of loans and other costs associated with cane growing, the statement said.

The statement quoted the Prime Minister as saying: “This special cane payment to farmers everywhere in Fiji will go a long way in lowering the financial burdens on our farmers, and it is further proof of my Government’s commitment to reducing the cost base for our cane growers.

“This industry has a come a long way since the severe devastation of Cyclone Winston. This turnaround is not only thanks to my Government’s continuous relief assistance, but also to our new and innovative ways to support and advance the industry, and of course, the heart and sweat of Fijian sugarcane farmers.

“While we’ve made great progress together, our work will continue as we make this industry a model to the world; a resilient, modern and competitive sugar industry that will support Fijians for generations to come.”
