Francis Kirikirikula hopes to make the final cut of Athletics Fiji’s eight member team for the 2018 Melanesian Games in Port Vila, Vanuatu on May 9- 11.

The former Suva Grammar School sprinter made his national debut during the 2013 Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna. He also represented Fiji at the 2014 Pacific Games.

“I know the competition will be tough as I will be competing against top athletes in the Melanesian Games but I’m training hard and sacrificing a lot,” the 22-year-old said.

“This will be my second Melanesian Games and my aim is to give my best shot and to return with a gold medal.

Kirikirikula said his main challenge now is juggling work with his training schedules.

“I do work and train in the afternoon and looking forward to the challenge ahead. It’s tough but I always have God on my side and that is always my secret weapon, I pray before I start and also at the end of day,” he said.

“Nothing is impossible I just have to trust myself and always put God first,” he said.

Fiji Athletics development officer Albert Miller said the number of athletes representation to the Melanesian Games is likely to increase.

“Athletics have developed over the years and there are 600 athletes participating at this year’s Shop N Save Fiji National Championship. There is a lot of young athletes participating which is a positive sign for Athletics Fiji.

“The number of athletes representing Fiji to the Melanesian Games is likely to increase this year,” he said.
