Yamaha safety riding chief instructor Hidenobu Toh, from Japan, leaves behind an important message for Police motorbike riders.

Mr Toh leaves for Japan today after conducting a two-week course for motorcyclists in Suva which ended yesterday.

His message: “Your safety as Police motorbike riders is paramount.”

Mr Toh said the officers had good motorcycles and helmets but they needed to be equipped with other safety equipment like boots, gloves, paddings and jackets so when accidents happen there were minimal to no injuries.

“If they have good safety equipment, they will be happy riders and they will perform better,” he said.

“Our priority is Yamaha customer safety.”

Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said the recommendations by Mr Toh were very important.

“I’ve been injured in a motorcycle myself. And I know exactly what he is talking about,” Mr Qiliho said.

“I had United States military boots, it tore off my leg when I had my accident and I also had injuries on my hand because I did not have gloves on.”

Mr Qiliho said he has given directions to his director traffic Senior Superintendent (SSP) Mahesh Mishra to make sure the safety equipment were provided.

“I can’t let my riders go out there and perform if I don’t provide the right tools. We are going through more training but most of our cycles will go out for the official handover in about two weeks’ time,” he said.
