Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS) teachers have been taking turns to keep watch over students because the school has been without power for the past three days.

RKS Vice-Principal Pio Veivoli said Tropical Cyclone Keni knocked out power supply to the school.

Mr Veivoli said they assigned teachers to keep watch on the students in boarding facilities every night. The staff took turns while a small generator could only supply enough power for parts of the school.

“This affected us. 584 students are in boarding facilities, frozen food in the refrigerators and a roofing iron have been damaged.”

He said power supply was the school’s biggest problem and officials have been in touch with the Prime Minister’s Office and the Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA).

Meanwhile, there is no power supply from RKS to Natovi and Queen Victoria School and villages and settlements in between.

Mr Veivoli said they had been lucky and blessed to have held their term end exams a week before the Easter Weekend.

“Some of our students have been in the West since the two cyclones and we are having classes as normal as possible at least for the next couple of days.”

He said students would be allowed to return home for the school break after the parent’s teacher’s interviews on Wednesday next week.

The Fiji Electricity Authority said teams were working to repair damaged powerlines and restore power.

FEA said that for customers who were yet to receive power supply, power lines to these areas needed to be repaired and tested prior to the lines being brought into service and power restored.

“There were a lot of faults in the affected areas and we need to ensure that the power lines are thoroughly inspected to identify the faults and hazards before they are repaired and tested prior to the power lines being energised,” an FEA statement said.

“Our teams have been working cautiously and safely to repair and restore power supply to the affected areas.”
