The Sai Prema Foundation was formed to serve under-privileged people of Fiji, said its director Sumeet Tappoo.

Highlighting its aim in medicare, The Gift of Life, Mr Tappoo said: “This project is about providing free heart surgery to the children of Fiji.

“Local health authorities estimate that about 200 children are born every year in Fiji with congenital heart disease.

“It becomes very sad when lots of children lose their lives when they do not receive the right treatment.

“The sheer unaffordability makes it impossible for the families to give the right treatment.’’

He said there were not enough facilities in Fiji to ensure that children get the right treatment for heart diseases.

The only option for parents is to wait for visiting teams of doctors who visit Fiji for free treatment.

Those parents with money can afford to take their children for overseas treatment, he said.

Mr Tappoo said it cost $100,000 for a child to get treated for congenital heart diseases abroad.

He said he wanted many children as possible in Fiji to be screened to find out if they have congenital heart disease.
