Yasawa North Secondary School athletes had to wear their primary school’s uniforms to participate at the Maritime Zone for the first time yesterday.

This did not deter them as they went on win the boy’s title by scooping 7 gold medals, 6 silvers and 8 bronze to edge out Gau Secondary School who had 7 gold, 4 silvers and 4 bronze medals.

Yasawa North Secondary School manager Romulo Nakione said despite the setback they were determined to win and qualify for the Coca-Cola Games.

“We were motivated by the sufferings we had to face because of the cyclone and this made us stronger to stand up and take on whatever challenge that is in front of us,” he said.

Cicia Secondary School retained the girl’s title by winning 7 gold and 3 silver medals while Gau Secondary School came second with 7 gold, 2 silvers and 2 bronze medals.

Maritime Zone coordinator Biu Colati said eight schools took part.

“This year I’ve noticed that more schools have come in but the number of athletes have decreased. This shows that they are getting in athletes that are medal prospects for the Coca- Cola Games.”
