A 41-year-old farmer who went missing on Sunday afternoon after two boats collided, throwing him into the Qawa River, has been found dead near Cawaira Village, Labasa.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that farmer Devesi Vosadrau was found dead on Monday night at about 10pm.

“The victim was found floating in Qawa River near the Cawaira Village by villagers,” Ms Naisoro said.

“A post mortem examination will be conducted soon to find out the cause of death as investigations continue.”

Ms Naisoro revealed that at around 2.30pm on Sunday a 15-year-old student of Cawaira, Labasa, was operating a boat with seven passengers.

“While heading from Cawaira towards Vulovi and upon reaching the Fiji Sugar Corporation bend, the student could not control the speed and collided with an oncoming fi-breglass boat carrying four passengers,” she said.

“Due to the impact two passengers sustained injuries and are admitted at Labasa Hospital.

“The farmer was thrown out in the water and went missing at Qawa River.”

A search was conducted the same day into the night, but the farmer could not be located.

Mr Vosadrau is survived by his wife and five children.
