Oceanographic research vessel, American owned SSV Robert C. Seaman’s is going to be in Fiji on October 15, 2018.

The vessel is now at Kaatia in Tahiti. It is expected to be in Fiji for 15 days.

SSV Robert C. Seaman’s is a 134-foot brigantine-rigged sailing is used for oceanographic research vessel.

The 38-person crew includes graduate students, educators, an environmental policy analyst, medical professionals, writers, a business professional, scientists, and professional mariners, most of whom are alumni of Sea’s core academic programme, Sea Semester.

Crew members of the vessel will be in the country to conduct research on environmental change.

United States Embassy regional public affairs officer Dmitri Tarakhovsky said the vessel runs an undergraduate academic study abroad programme, with intensive research in oceanography.

“Established in 1971, SEA programmes are built entirely around the organisation’s two purpose-built sailing vessels, the SSV Robert C. Seamansand the SSV Corwith Cramer: the former generally cruises in the Pacific, while the latter sails the Atlantic and Mediterranean,” he said.

“The Sea Education Association (SEA) is a well-known undergraduate study abroad organization based in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

“Although the subjects and areas of study can vary, the programme largely focuses on two areas: oceanographic and environmental studies, and leadership development via seamanship.

“Classes start at the SEA facility collocated with one of our nation’s premier oceanography institutes at Woods Hole, and conclude aboard one of their tall ships.

“SEA Semester programs offer students the opportunity to take 17-18 semester hours offered through Boston University, the primary academic partner of SEA.

“Credits can also be earned directly if a student attends one of SEA’s approximately 30 partner universities,” he said.

Meanwhile, the vessel is named after United States former Secretary of the Air Force and NASA Deputy Administrator, Robert Channing Seamans.
