Saqani High School is geared up to improve on their standings in this year’s Coca-Cola Games which starts on Thursday at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.

The Cakaudrove based-school is fielding seven athletes.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday coach Apisai Ratilai said they selected their athletes after conducting a trial.

“This is our second day in Suva and our preparations started from the second week of term one,” Ratilai said.

“Right now the students are looking forward and our aim is to improve on our standings. We are aiming to win at least two gold medals. There are seven athletes which is an increase from last year’s team.”

Ratilai said their athletes got some exposure by participating in some local competitions.

“Two of our athletes are participating in the sub-junior and junior grades so this will be their first time to experience what it’s like to run at the Coke Games.

“One of our track athletes reached the finals last year and is our medal prospect.

“Some of the athletes are first-timers and we want them to have a feel of the synthetic track compared to the grass track back home. We made it a point for our athletes to participate in the Games so they could expose their talents and feel what the atmosphere is really like,” he added.
