Five men who allegedly assaulted a Police officer last weekend appeared at the Nasinu Magistrates Court yesterday.

The accused, Asaeli Matai, 21, Malakai Ledua, 18, Ratu Ilaitia Varani, 22, Filipe Lesi, 33, and Losalini Moce, 53, appeared before Magistrate Sufia Hamza.

They face two counts of act with intent to cause grievous harm and aggravated robbery.

On April 15, 2018 the men are alleged to have unlawfully wounded Police Constable Suliano Vasuitoga, 37, causing him grievous bodily harm.

After the alleged assault they allegedly robbed him of a Police torchlight, a USB flash drive and $50 in cash, all to the total value of $140.22.

Police prosecutor Constable Setareki Mocevakaca strongly objected to bail for the accused men.

He said the case was of public interest, and a Police officer was brutally assaulted while carrying out his duty. Constable Mocevakaca also said the offence was indictable in nature. He also served them with first phase disclosures in court.

One of the accused chose Legal Aid representation while the other four waived their right to a lawyer.

Magistrate Hamza remanded them in custody and adjourned the case to April 27, 2018 for first call in the High Court in Suva.
