A single mother brought her son to the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam College of Nursing graduation ceremony yesterday so he could share in the joy of her graduation.

Sandhya Devi of Namoli, in Labasa said: “I am a single mother and my son is my world. Raising a child alone does not require both parents to be together. A child can be raised alone by either a mother or father.”

Crediting the support of her mother who died in August last year, the 33-year-old stood proudly as one of the many graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing Science Bridging Programme graduation ceremony.

“After my mother’s death I had to struggle a lot looking after my five-year-old son, Aryaan Wasson. Sometimes I had to take him with me to my classes. I am blessed to have such a great tutors who understood me,” she said.

“Everything I have achieved, I owe it to my son,” Ms Devi said.

She said it was not her first graduation. She graduated with a Diploma in Nursing in 2008.

“My message to the single mums is not to let people decide that you are worthless. You cannot do things by your own – just believe in yourself and you can do it,” Ms Devi said.

“There is lot of challenges as a single mum, but don’t let that define you. Marriage does not define a woman.”

She has not ruled out the option of furthering her education by pursuing a post-graduate course. Edited by Epineri Vula
