Despite being Nukuloa College’s lone athlete, 14-year-old Naomi Navuga has booked a spot in today’s junior girl’s 100 metres final.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday the Yakete native from Ba said, it was her persistence during training that drove her on.

“I’m proud of my school and I aim to win the gold medal tomorrow,” she said.

Navuga indicated that she had to be strong and overcome the fear of being the school’s only athlete and to compete against athletes from big schools around the country.

“Being here today and to be the only athlete from my school is indeed a great privilege.

“One of the major challenges was coming here alone, but I am glad I got my teacher Ms Rosalia who always pushed me not to be afraid.

“I ran in the Chow Games last year where I came first. But I will not underestimate the other schools who are well-known in the field of athletics.

“My focus is winning my school’s first ever gold medal and I will give my all in tomorrow’s race.”

Navuga will run in the junior girl’s 100m final at 5.46pm.
