Petero Veitaqomaki of Marist Brothers High School was awarded the Best Male athlete at the Coca-Cola Games yesterday.

Veitaqomaki set a new intermediate boys 800 metres record with a time of 1 minute 58.06 seconds beating the previous record (1: 58.56) set by Iliesa Ratete of Natabua High School in 2014.

The Lavena, Taveuni native also won gold in the 1500 metres and was awarded $150 and a return trip to either Australia or New Zealand by Fiji Airways.

He said he was determined of winning the award.

“I was confident from day one,” he said.

“I give back the glory to the Almighty God, my coaches, and teachers and to my parents for their never ending support. Without them, I would have not able to achieve my goals.

“I would now focus on my studies and then at the end of the year, I will start training for the 2019 Fiji Finals.”

Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou congratulated all the schools that participated at the Coke Games.

“I am extremely proud of the performances of individual athletes,” Tuitubou said.

“We have seen rural based schools causing upsets and being very competitive in both track and field events. I was particularly impressed with the performances of Niusawa Methodist from Taveuni winning three gold medals in the field events. Other schools from the rural areas also had impressive performances.

“This is one of the reasons the Government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has always placed an emphasis in promoting the development of rural based athletes.”
