The Lautoka rugby team started their Vodafone Vanua Championship clash with a bang when they thrashed Ra 29-9 at the FSC ground in Rakiraki yesterday.

What happened: Lautoka’s lack of discipline at the start of the game saw Ra took a 6-0 lead through the boots of Butunivanua Luveni.

Their joy was short-lived when Mocelutu Qaranivalu broke through the Ra defence to score the first try. The hosts regained the lead 9-7 in the 20th minute from a Luvenipenalty.

Halftime: Ra 9-7 Lautoka

Lautoka came back storming in the second spell when Epineri Goneva scored two converted tries in the 54th and 58th minutes respectively for a 21-9 lead. They further increased it to 24-9 from a penalty before Savenaca Waqa scored their final try.

Comment: Lautoka coach Osea Umuumulovo said: “We are still at our rebuilding stage. We are happy with our first win and training has been up to par.

“We will be going back to the drawing board and learn from our mistakes as we prepare for our game next week.”
