The Cakaudrove rugby side have turned their focus on Ovalau after beating Northern Bulls 23-11 at Ratu Ganilau Park, Savusavu yesterday.

Playing their Vodafone Vanua Championship opener in front of their 300 fans, the Rayne Simpson coached-side put on a gutsy performance.

What happened: Despite the strong defence from the Bulls, Are Monoko of Cakaudrove scored the first try in the 7th minute with Kitione Kamikamica adding the extras for a 7-0 lead.

But the Bulls hit back with Avenisa Di kicking over a penalty to narrow the deficit 7-3. But Kamikamica extended their lead with a penalty

Half Time: Cakaudrove 10–3 Northern Bulls

Bulls tried their best to score but the Cakaudrove defence stood tall. Play became scrappy at times with yellow cards being dished out before Bulls were a man down when on of their players copped a red card.

The game continued on with Cakaudrove running in tries to further extend their lead while Bulls managed to score a consolation try and a last-minute penalty.

Big Play: Cakaudrove’s try from Monoko in the 7th minute took the sting out of the Bulls.

Comments: Cakaudrove coach Rayne Simpson said: “Naitasiri is always hard to beat but I think my boys have done really well as they stuck to the game plan despite the hiccups right at the end of the game.

Northern Bulls interim manager Peniasi Moroca said: “We will learn from our weakness from today’s game against Cakaudrove and will prepare well in our next game against Nasinu.”
